Hi! This is kind of off topic but I need some
guidance from an established blog. Is it very hard to set up your own blog?
I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty
quick. I’m thinking about setting up my own but I’m
not sure where to begin. Do you have any points or suggestions?
Thank you
Hi there!
The great thing about using WordPress to setup a blog is that it is what we call a content management system (CMS), that means that it has an interface that you can work with that doesn’t usually require coding, unless there is a particular advanced customization that you want.
I would start by thinking about a name for your blog and a niche. When I say niche I mean, something unique that you can talk about in the blog that maybe no-one else is doing, or something that you know a potential audience will be interested in. You will need to pick out a hosting plan and a domain name before you start setting up. I do run some free WordPress classes through MELSA the library system. All the classes are free to the general public and they are designed to show people how to get started in WordPress. The first class already ran this week, which deals with domain names, hosting and installing WordPress. It is a 7 class series, run as a webinar through Zoom and if you sign up you will get a link to the recording of the class afterwards to review. Some people turn up in person and some people just watch the video and some do both.
The WordPress class series is run by Ramsey County library, but you don’t have to live in Ramsey County to attend. One time I had someone call in from New York!
Here is the link to register for the next of the WordPress class series, Starting Your WordPress Website Part 1. It is for a website, but also applies to a blog: https://rclreads.bibliocommons.com/events/66b0e3cecf36f57164afcf2a
Because you missed the first class, if you are interested, there is another first class running on November 12th with Washington County Library. The sign up link is https://washcolib.libcal.com/event/12816995
Thanks for reaching out, feel free to ask any more questions.
